Dampwood Termite

Description

The winged reproductive may be up to one inch in length, including the wings. The antennae usually have more than twenty-two segments. Coloration of the body is light brown. The soldier is between 3/8" - 3/4" long, has a large head and large, multi-toothed mandibles. The antenna, spine and coloration of the soldier are the same as the swarmer's. Workers are about 1/2" long, wingless and white to cream in color.

Habitat

Dampwood termites are found in felled timber, stumps and dead trees. Though it is rare you may also find them in the dead limbs of a living standing tree. From these places they move into structures. Although they don't require it, they do prefer when wood is in contact with the ground. They are also drawm to areas where there is a constant moisture supply, such as leaky pipes. There must be high moisture content in the wood in order for Dampwood Termites to infest.
